Reflections on growth

This is a caricature of me given as a gift when I left Unilever I was a Marketing Manager of Deodorants. I had been there for 12 years at Unilever and felt I had reached my career ceiling with little prospects of a promotion. I decided to go for adventures outside of my comfort zone and outside of Durban. I had started as a young graduate trainee – when I was 22 after completing my B.Com degree Rhodes University. By the time I left I had worked over 10 brands – all in the personal care space. I had 2 overseas stints – one in Dubai & one in Argentina. I had been to the school of marketing.

I had attended many leadership courses – locally and abroad. I had travelled to almost every continent. It was time to spread my wings. The world outside Unilever was not as warm and cosy. Adapting to this new world took me some time. I learnt new skills – I met different people. Sometimes one has to go out to learn new things. No matter how uncomfortable it is. It’s only when we are outside our comfort zones we learn to grow.
